Our letter to Santa Claus
Dear Santa Claus,
This year we would like to ask you something special, and maybe you are the only one who can help us.
As you know, we are doing everything to complicate our lives, and it seems that centuries of history have not helped us understand what really important things are.
The progress we have made in material things seems to have clouded our eyes, making us increasingly unaware of our true values and the rules of civil coexistence.
We learn bad news from the media every day: it seems that we are used to this, and it does not always make us think deeply.
Some of us - in all corners of the earth - injure and kill our brothers for reasons that are never justifiable.
Others pursue economic goals without setting ethical limits or scruples of any kind, as if they could bring their wealth to the afterlife.
Some others do not hesitate to give up the values of brotherhood, equality, freedom and respect that should always guide our actions, in the heart even before in reason.
Too many of us - in our daily behavior - still seem to be oblivious to the fate of our planet, which we have not inherited from our predecessors, but we only have to borrow from our children and their descendants.
Many of us are doing something to improve, but it is still not enough: yet a bit of normality, simplicity, spontaneity and common sense would be enough.
Dear Santa, we know very well that in this period you are very busy with deliveries, and you don't have much time to devote to other activities.
But time is tight for all of us too: while making your deliveries, please ask everyone to do their part and to make their small contribution to a better world.
And ask them to act independently of what others do: as Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, "What we do is only a drop in the ocean, but if we didn't do it the ocean would have one drop less" .
While you're there, please also remind them that if they want to leave a concrete sign of their existence on this earth, they must think about it before it's too late: if they have a charitable idea, a project dedicated to others, or an initiative in favor of those who have been less lucky, they must realize it immediately and must take care of it until they have the energy and lucidity to do so.
Not words but concrete facts are needed, which can be achieved even without great means, because there is need for almost everything.
For example, it is enough to start from the local communities where each of us is inserted: unused premises can be equipped to provide a hot meal or shelter for the homeless, promote self-managed training centers, help young people design and build their working future in today's economy, assisting elderly and weaker people, and carrying out many other initiatives involving other private volunteers, institutions, foundations and local associations.
If during deliveries you meet someone who wants to devote his time to promoting and implementing concrete initiatives for others, let us know: we will try, in our small way, to assist those close to us in some way.
Thank you, Santa, for what you can do.
Best wishes for a Merry Christmas to you too!
PS: if while you are making deliveries you meet someone else who is willing to do the same in other parts of the world, please give them a copy of our letter and tell them to contact us to share their experiences.
